Is there a reason why squash merge is not enabled in this repo (only merge commits are allowed)?
If multiple commits are made in the course of one PR in order to refine and correct the origin commit, it usually makes sense to squash before merging into the default branch. Otherwise the default branch shows each of the iterations individually, and that usually isn't necessary or desired.
